P-Bowl: Second Half Live Blog

Halftime Thoughts: Well, we're ahead. Barely. Still, I've got to give Navy's defense a lot of credit, especially Irv Spencer, Ross Pospisil, and Ram Vela. We've been seeing Utah really run the ball aggressively inside, but also try to get the running game going on the edges using some fakes and misdirection. As far as the offense goes, we just need to eliminate mistakes. Too many false starts for starters, but I don't need to tell you that the back breakers we're Reggie's fumble and the missed 50 yard field goal. I loved Coach N's intensity with the sideline reporter, and you know he's gonna do everything to win this game not only for the seniors, but for the program. I'll do my best to get back to everybody's thoughts, but if I'm slow on the posting forgive me.

11:00- Dude, was that Greg flying on the kickoff coverage? FDD?
11:05- Great job again by the? Navy D, especially the line to force a three and out. Time to pull away...
11:12- Back by popular demand...ESTABLISH THE FULLBACK! Eric Kettani goes in for a touchdown after a brilliant Navy drive to put the Mids up 17-7. The offense is starting to feel it, and now the defense really has some energy too. Look for Utah to try to get aggressive on this next series.
11:20- I will never make a dumb joke about Ross Pospisils name again. He is awsome.
11:24- Not a very good job of making his reads on that last drive, but I won't get too picky. Still, if we're gonna win this game we can't do it running standard triple option the rest of the way. I hope Coach Jasper is trying to set something up.
11:35- Yea, so Greg Thrasher was being held on that touchdown run...
11:40- I don't know what's going on, but Reggie continues to have a very, very tough game. You hate to see it because he's carried this team in the past, but if he makes a few plays in this game Navy is in a much more comfortable situation. Now Utah has the momentum and I have a very bad feeling.
11:43- Hernandez has had two fingertop grabs that have gone for big yards.
11:45- I Love BYU.
11:49- Austin Collie is my hero.
11:52- I hate football.
11:55- Why are we blitzing so much? Honestly...
11:59- Did Ketric Buffin not want to hit Johnson, Dammit. Dammit. Dammit. 21 unanswered points. Geez. Nothing more to say.
12:10- I was just joking about hating football. How about Coach N to call the fullback option on the two point conversion, just like PJ did against ND? Alright, real test here. We need a stop.
12:15- We gotta do something about the underneath pass...
12:19- Greg Thrasher just missed a chance at being the biggest hero ever.
12:20- I hate Brian Johnson. He however is a good player.
12:23- SHOULDA BEEN A TOUCHBACK
12:30- Losing a Bowl game like this really bothers me. You want to seniors to win so badly, and you want the program to make a statement. You figure it shouldn't be this way, that Navy should want and need this game more, but unfortunately it just hasn't turned out like that for the second year in a row. I think we saw some promise today, especially on the defensive side of the ball, but I can’t help going to bed tonight with a bit of a sinking feeling for those seniors who have invested so much in this program.
12:39- Zerb Never Quits.
12:41- ZERB NEVER QUITS
12:43- Mutherfarking turf.
12:45- This team never quits. I think we will be ok next year.

Why is Utah not passing? Navy's pass defense is not that good!!

Go Utes :)

Navy needs to look to pass. The Utah secondary is overplaying the run.

I thought navy should be doing a bit more play action to keep the Utes DB's honest.

f'ing refs suck. Missed holding on the Utah touchdown which was blatant! Then not knowing the rules for something as simple as a touchback. At least the made an apology but that doesn't mean too much right about now.

Where was that crew from?

I left that game genuinely pissed off. Reggie sucked worse than I've ever seen and lost the game by himself. Fumble on the two. Couple of big dropped passes that caused punts. And then he tripped on the cut back route that caused the interception that ended any hopes of a comeback. Too bad his steller career ended so poorly.

Why didnt we pass some more?
It seemed like Coach K was afraid to do that and it also looked like after 2 straight 3 and outs a switch to JB may have/may not have helped.
But it was worth a try (ok he did fumble first and only snap but Kaipo wanted no part of it as the game ran on).

Also- that non call of what was an obvious touchback-killed the game no matter what.
To start on the 99 3/4 yard line vs the 20 WAS HUGE!
Anyone else would have got that call.

Gary,
JB fumbled his only snap. I don't think it would have helped. Reggie catching passes would have helped. You hate to see it because he's been so great. Not the way you want your career to end...

Gary/Adam,
Despite the dropped passes by Reggie, ... Kaipo really didn't throw the ball all that well (accurately) --> If that pass on that wide open wheel route (that Zerb made a great catch on) would have been anywhere near in-bounds, it's a TD ... plus he threw into coverage all night. Putting JB in when the "O" stagnated in that middle 3rd/4th quarter timeframe MIGHT have "jump-started" it a bit (ala the Duke 4th Qtr) with his contrasting style, ... but not fair to speculate, ... and can take absolutely NOTHING from Navy for never giving up & playing their guts out. Bottom line --> Navy left way too many points on the field (fumble/dropped passes/poor execution/missed FG) in the first half when the "Dee" played great, ... and in the 2nd half, ... BG had no answer when Utah went to the Shotgun & threw those underneath crossing patterns with ease. Shame that RC had such a horrible game, Zebras seemed incompetent, ... and RC/KNKE didn't have longer cleats.

Looking forward to next year ... GO NAVY!!!

I don't disagree, but Jarod runs so much midline and that partiular play just wasn't there tonight. I think you had to stay with Kaipo. The interception to end thegame just semmed rushed. If Kaipo has a fault in his passing game it's that he likes to lock onto Reggie, who slipped on the play and wasn't able to come back for the ball. If he doesn't slip I think we have a chance for interference. You're right though, the Zebras once again were not on our side. BTW, on the opening kickoff of the second half a Navy player literally came into the camera angle flying in an attempt to tackle the return man. Was that Greg? It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen on kick coverage.

Adam,
Concur that the mid-line option plays would probably not have fared well, ... but was thinking more in-line with JB's elusive quickness/cut-on-a-dime ability in running the QB draw & passing plays to disrupt the "flow" at that juncture. Obvious that Utah was really over-committing to the TO/quick toss plays.
Greg in fact is the "bullett" on the KO team that flies down the field & "busts up" the wedge. I think he needs to work on properly "breaking down" into a more controlled position so he will turn a few of those charges into tackles, vice near misses (back inside the 20 yard line???). He is very fast. (o;

GO NAVY!!!
